Publisher 2003: "Publisher cannot save file"
A large file, full of graphics (about 100mb totla file size).
Can't save to desktop, C:\anywhere, or network drive. Can't 'Save As' anywhere. What I 'can' do is delete all the graphics, and then the file can magically be saved. (Graphics are in .tif format, about 3-4mb each). Graphic issue? Size issue? Publisher bug? Thanks for any help. |

Are you opening the file from the local hard drive? Publisher doesn't play well with networks or removable media, you should always work directly from the local hard drive, and also save to it. (you should actually never work with ANY program/file from a removable media) Are you running Norton? Do you get an error message? If so, what is that message. Melissa File is opened from local hard drive. Remember, I can remove graphics from file and then file is 'OK' No Norton (Trend-Micro, pretty solid); disabling it has no effect. Error Message (ala Microsoft): "Publisher cannot save file" I'd put a bullet in the Publisher CD if I thought it would help. Hmm... already a hole in it. Maybe somebody beat me to it. |

Lower the resolution of the .tif images. Did you create the images in
Illustrator? Publisher can compress the pictures. How about your graphics driver, is it current? -- Mary Sauer MSFT MVP http://office.microsoft.com/ http://msauer.mvps.org/ news://msnews.microsoft.com wrote in message ups.com... Lowering the resolution is not a option. The pictures are for a catalogue; we have experimented with lower resolutions and the results were not satisfactory. Some of the graphics were recently scanned, some of have been around 'forever'. Let me reiterate that if I remove the graphics files, the "File Save" will be OK. In fact, I can leave some of the graphics in the file (but not all), and the file will save OK. We also have some smaller brochures that were made with the same publisher version, and use some of the same images that are in the catalog. We do not see the "Publisher cannot save file" message with these files. So it appears that either the file size or some conflict with one or more of the graphics images is causing this problem. I was posting here in the hopes that someone had seen this issue and had a solution or workaround. ((gets on soap box)) In one sense, the issue is not this specific problem but instead the incredible shoddiness in which Microsoft develops and implements some of its code. I have seen this flavor of problem in virtually all large Microsoft programs. In this particular case, the error message is absolutely horrible. OK, perhaps there are four or five reasons why this could occur. But how hard is it to list these reasons? Well, I'll answer that. Not hard at all. ((steps down from soap box)) |

Have you thought about linking the pictures?
Do you have a network drive? Right-click My Computer, and then click Disconnect Network Drive. The below is part of an article in the Knowledge Base that might help even though it is referring to saving a 2003-07 publication to an earlier version. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827316/en-us 1.On the Tools menu, click Graphics Manager. 2. In the Select a picture list, right-click the picture that you suspect is larger than 16 MB, and then click Details. 3. Verify that the image is larger than 16 MB. 4. Click Close to close the Details window. 5. Right-click the picture in the Select a picture list, and then click Replace this Picture. 6. Select the low resolution version of the image, and then click Insert. Repeat these steps for each picture that exceeds 16 MB in file size. -- Mary Sauer MSFT MVP http://office.microsoft.com/ http://msauer.mvps.org/ news://msnews.microsoft.com wrote in message ups.com... How much hard drive space do you have available on your boot (probably C drive? Not a drive space issue (sorry, should have mentioned that in original post). More than 70gb available. I'm thinking now that one of the 'embedded' pics is corrupt but I haven't had time to go through them yet. |

I'm thinking now that one of the 'embedded' pics is corrupt but I haven't had time to go through them yet. That would have been my next suggestion. Go through and delete an image. If the file still refuses to save, Undo (Ctrl+Z) and delete the next one. Repeat ad infinitum until the file saves. (If you have gone through all of them without success, you either play the delete-two-images game, with ½n(n-1) combinations, or delete all the images and reimport them. Which is easier depends how many images you have.) -- Ed Bennett - MVP Microsoft Publisher http://ed.mvps.org |
