Troubleshooting Formatting Headers and Footers

I have a long document, over 150 pages, with 20 different sections [some
sections are landscape orientation, others start a new chapter of the
document]. I am trying to add a graphic banner to the header for EACH
section. [I copied the graphic from Publisher, and grouped it.] When I
insert the graphic into the header, I change the formatting to "Behind Text"
because I want to be able to change the TEXT easily [not put it in a text box
'grouped' with the graphic] When I try to do this I can keep the graphic for
the first one or two sections, then it fails. I've tried
connecting/unconnecting the headers ["same as previous"] with no luck. It
seems simple enough. I want a graphic with text over the top that will change
with each section. Any ideas? Thank you! [Of course, I need this info
yesterday!]

The 'behind text' setting has nothing to do with whether or not you can
change the text. The problem is that either your headers are all the same
(same as previous) or they are not. There is no half-and-half (keep the
graphic but change the text).

A couple of approaches you could use, depending on what you are doing.

1. If the changing text is the chapter heading -- or any styled text from
the body of the document -- you can use a StyleRef field. Then there's no
need for any change at all between sections -- it will all be automatic.

2. Anchor the graphic to the *footer* -- it can be positioned anywhere on
the page, including under the header. Use the same footer throughout, but
with different headers as needed.

Thank you for your response.
First, the 'behind text' does matter in this case as the graphic is a filled
banner across the top of the page that I want the header text to be on top
of. (dark blue banner with white text on top) Once I formatted the graphic
object to be "behind text" it solved only part of the problem.

I agree that '..either the headers are all the same (same as previous) or
they are not."... I made SURE all footers, and headers, were all "same as
previous" but when I inserted (anchored) the graphic in the footer; the
graphic DOES NOT appear in each section. So, I tried it the other way --
making sure all footers WERE NOT same as previous, my thought being I'd just
anchor the banner graphic in each footer section.. worked OK for the First
section; but when I attempted to do the same in the SECOND section, the
banner *disappears* from the first section footer! I have tried this several
times, with no success.

As to your first suggestion; I am unfamiliar with using a StyleRef field and
how this works. Can you direct me to more informationon this? [I do use the
Heading 1 style for each new chapter (section) so this seems a resonable
alternative for reflecting the text I want to appear at the top of the page.]

You mentioned that although I'm anchoring the banner graphic in the footer,
the actual image can be positioned anywhere ..."Including under the header"
-- Is there anyway I can "see" these different layers?

One discovery I've made since my first post: Some of my co-workers are
creating their piece of the document in WordPerfect, THEN copying and pasting
the text into a word document and sending it to me. I have more than likely
dumped a lot of coding from WP into this document, but I can't "see" it like
you might be able to in WordPerfect (eg "reveal codes"). Short of selecting
all the text, then "remove formatting" copying and pasting the text into a
NEW Word document, any suggestions how I might find this wayword junk from
WordPerfect? The document is over 100 pages and the thought of having to
reformat page by page is sickening!
