I have a template in process that has three columns. How do I link the text
in the 1st and 3rd column together?

You don't. I thought I answered a very similar question a couple of days
ago. Columns flow in sequence, hence the term sometimes used 'snaking
columns'. If you tell us what you are trying to achieve, we should have a
workaround for you.
