Cross-reference across multiple documents

I'm trying to split my document up into separate files, but need to
have cross-references between them. I've set up bookmarks for the
items I want to refer to, which works ok, but the fields (Figure captions)
have the wrong numbers in them when brought in the psuedo master
document I created with INCLUDETEXT fields.
Eg:

Chapter 1
This refers to the figure in Chapter 2: Figure 2-1
Figure 1-1

Chapter 2
This refers to the figure in Chapter 1: Figure 1-1
Figure 2-1

The INCLUDETEXT fields in the sub-documents have the \! switch,
but they don't seem to update properly and not increment
the Figure counter.

How do I fix this, and what really is the procedure for using
multiple files and then bringing them together, short of cut and
pasting out of each doc. (I need to bring them all into the
same document for EndNote to do it's thing with the
references)

You need to add the \* ! switch at the end of the IncludeText fields to
prevent the field content coming across the link from updating in the new
context.

Thanks. Almost works with the \! switch, at least the reference is right (I
had got
that working)

Problem is that in the second document referencing the
figure in Introduction.doc, the next figure in that docuent is now Figure
2-2
not Figure 2-1.
The SEQ field with teh figure number is recognizing the SEQ field in the
cross-
reference and updating it's count!

Is there a way around this?

You'll need to rename the numbering sequence in the one file or the other.
Open one document (say, the one you'll be "including". alt+F9 to view the
field codes. Find SEQ Figure and replace with SEQ FigureX and then replace
all.

Note: I'd make a backup copy of the document, first, just in case :-)
