I am trying to print Black and White handouts of color slides in case I
cannot get a digital projector, and two of the slides I'd downloaded off
Microsoft PowerPoint site called "Green Apple" design template provided by
Template Central, on PowerPoint 2003 turn black when I try to preview them
for printing black and white or greyscale.

It depends how the templates were designed as to how they will print.

If you can "select" the background image, then you can control how it will
print.

see this page made by Steve R (it even contains pictures ! )

Control how your presentation prints in B/W

I'm so sorry! I'll try never to do it again. Honestly, I have no idea what
got INTO me! I'm so ashamed ...
