Default default save setting won't stay

Using Word 2007. I have set the default "save as" option to Word 2003. It
works fine during any one session, but when I exit Word and come back in,
the default is back to the .docx setting. What am I missing???

There is no default "Save As" setting but there is a default "Save" setting.
is that what you really mean?

Okay, yes I mean the default "save" setting. But I'm talking about the
default "save as type" setting if you want to get really specific. Thought
it was clear from the question I was asking about the ".doc" vs. the ".docx"

I think you are confused. You can set the default "SAVE" function to .doc.
This means that any document you SAVE will be in .doc format. AFAIK there is
no setting to make the "Save AS" a certain type - that's the idea of "Save
As".....you choose the format you want to save as.....

The initial save for any document is a Save As, and the default type that is
presented in the "Files of type" dialog is determined by the default save
format. This will also be the file type selected as the default if you use
Save As on an existing document to save it under another name. There would
be no point in setting a default for the file type used when you just Save,
since that is always the same as the one used for the initial Save As.

Here's what I've been doing. I click on the office button in the upper left
corner and go to Word Options. One of those options is the default file
type which is .docx and I change it to .doc and click okay. It remains set
to .doc until I exit Word. When I re-open Word, the default file type is
back to the Word 2007 extension of .docx

Assuming this is a Registry setting, then either it's for some reason not
sticking or, if you're in a corporate environment, it may be that the
Registry is being wiped at startup. There are also some "Registry cleaners"
that can cause more havoc than they do good.
