Default Mail Merge using Excel worksheet as data source

I am encountering the error "Word could not re-establish a DDE connection to
complete the current task." when trying to open an excel data source for mail
merge mailing labels. I'm running Office 2000. Any ideas?

Note that there is a mailmerge.fields newsgroup where you might have gotten a
quicker response...
