Default Table of Authorities field codes affecting footnotes

I have several field codes that interfere with my page formats and with my
footnotes. When the show characters is off, you can see large white spaces
at the end of each page and often the footnotes references are on different
pages than the actual footnotes. When I turn show characters on, the field
codes fill in the spaces and move the text with the references to the correct
page. It's clearly the field codes that are the problem. I need them in the
document, so deleting them is out of the question--is there any way to keep
Word from allowing space for them?
