Default TOC in Word 2007

I created my first TOC in Word using a how-to video I found on YouTube.
But, I would like the TOC items to be hyperlinks to the headings in the
document (the video didn't show that part).

I found that if I click in the TOC a couple times, I get the Update Table
label at the top of the TOC, then if I click at the very beginning of an
item, I get a informational popup telling me I can use Ctrl-Click to jump to
the heading. Way too much trouble. I would just like to double-click on an
item and then jump to that heading. Users aren't going to do well at
following the above steps that I outlined.

The method I use to create the TOC is totally automatic. Is there a way to
add this hyperlink functionality, also automatically? Instead of using the
normal steps to create a hyperlink for each TOC item?

Thanks

Click the Office button, and then click Word Options. In the Advanced
category, clear the check box next to "Use CTRL + Click to follow
hyperlink." Click OK. Note that this is a user-specific/machine-specific
setting.

Note that I have not tried this as I've never had a need to:

If the document is "final" (ie, not going to edit it any more) save it
as a PDF. Click on the Options button in the Save As dialog, and there
is an option to "create bookmarks" with two sub-options that may be of
interest.

What you describe indicates that the TOC is already hyperlinked (as they all
are, by default, in every version since 2000). As Stefan points out, in Word
2002 and above, you must use Ctrl+click to follow ANY hyperlink unless you
change that option in the place he described for Word 2007 (Tools | Options
| Edit in previous versions). The result will be that you can use a single
click (not a double-click) to follow the hyperlink, but you will not be able
to edit the display text of any hyperlink without going to the Edit
Hyperlink dialog. Your call.

Also, as Stefan pointed out, this just makes it easier for you, not for
anyone else who uses your doc unless that user has also changed the Options
setting.

Just tried it, works great. Together with Jeffery's suggestion, this will
work well for users of this document.

Looks like the PDF output will be the solution to not having require each
user to change their Word settings.
Thanks
