Default Getting Page numbers right in Word 2003...

I'd be grateful if some of you could tell me what I am doing wrong with my
page numbers in WORD 2003. I am ending up with page numbers at BOTH the top
and the bottom of a long book manuscript with many separate sections. I
obviously don't want them in BOTH places & would prefer to have them at the
bottom, out of the way of my headers. This could be because I originally
inserted page numbers from the INSERT/Page numbers command but am now using
headers, though I haven't so far used any of the page numbering features of
headers & footers.

Also, some of my chapter titles as headers are printing over the page
numbers, making a mess of both.

I expect the answer is simple, & my problem is due to my just beginning this
long formatting task & not having yet digested all the rules. But any help
you could provide could save me a lot of time.

Thanks in advance!

alex

Open the Headers and remove the page numbers from them.

Using Insert | Page Numbers is not recommended for any but the simplest
documents, and never when you will have other text in the header/footer.
This command inserts the page number in a frame at the top or bottom of the
page, anchored to the header or footer. To remove it, View | Header and
Footer, select the frame, and delete it (see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting...lyIndented.htm for more on
this). Then insert the page numbers where you want them, as part of the
header or footer. For more on headers and footers, see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm

Default Getting Page numbers right in Word 2003...

Thanks to Doug & Suzanne, & especially to MVP Suzanne for all your
authoritative & detailed FAQs & addendum.

i'm going through the whole book & taking the numbers out of the headers, &
since the book consists of 55 chapters, each one set up as a separate
section, this is taking some time.

Along the way, i am noticing that i seem to have left-justified
even-numbered pages in all the footers, just as i want them, but no
right-justified odd-numbered pages, as i would also want them. i've tried
to change this in 3 or 4 chapters, with mixed results, in one case it
worked, in the others it didn't, maybe i need to check under page setup,
"different odd & even pages" for this to work right. In any case, i think
i'll keep trying...

I'm following the rules set out in Aaron Shepard's book Perfect Pages,
Self-Publishing with Microsoft Word, and in a few weeks i hope to be ready
to convert the whole thing to a PDF file & go forward to having the book
printed...

Let me say even more than THANKS! i love WORD, i have used every version
since Word 3 for DOS back in 1986, and during those early years i played an
active role in our NY PC users group MSWord SIG, where at that time it fell
to my lot to help others with the program. So i really appreciate what you
are doing here with this USENet group & will try not to impose too greatly
on your generosity.

all the best!

Still working at it, Suzanne, & even though i've printed out & read your
page at:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting...lyIndented.htm

and am following your instructions, i have an "unaccountable indent" not in
the text, but in the header itself. After i've got your six points all
lined up and pressed delete, i can't get my running head on the odd page to
right align. there's a little maybe 3-character wide space hugging that
space, so that the header looks amateurishly aligned.

Is there any solution for this, short of forking out $$$ for Word 2007.
which i gather also has some problems...?

all the best!

Hey, i may have a fail-safe solution, if all else fails. If there is no way
to push the odd-right-page header over to the tight, i could indent the
even-left-page header a few spaces to the right to make it look like both
indents were done on purpose...

all the best!

It could be that there's still a "wandering frame" there, but it could also
be that Word has added an indent or moved a tab stop to accommodate the page
number frame that used to be there. If you don't have the ruler displayed
(but surely you do), then display it, click in the header paragraph, and
look at the ruler for clues. FWIW, I find the display of text boundaries
(along with nonprinting characters) very helpful in troubleshooting such
issues as well.

Yes, you'll need to use "Different odd and even" and format the running
heads differently for odd and even pages. One real advantage of Insert Page
Numbers is that it gives you the option of Outside (or Inside, though I
can't imagine why anyone would want that) placement for the numbers as a
single step, but given the other problems the feature causes (especially if
you have other header/footer text), I still advise avoiding it in serious
documents.
