Default Square boxes in place of text

I have word 2000 Sp3, OS Win XP Home, allways use fonts in program. some doc
are OK some are
not. changing font only changes shape of box or square. tryed opening in
wordpad same thing square in place of text.

Yes this does apply. but I did not do this=
SYMPTOMS
When you format text with a symbol font, such as Wingdings, and then change
to a non-symbol font such as Times New Roman, the text is replaced with box
characters.
I only use standard fonts.
tried the workaround maybe I did it wrong copied gray box and pasted in new
macrosaved then ran it
no help
