Outline numbering goes to 9 levels. If you use SEQ fields you can have as
many as you want. Readers lose interest at more than three.

A SEQ field can be inserted from the InsertFields menu. Every time you
insert one in the same series, the number increments by one.

Actually though it would be murder trying to create a multi-level list
scheme using SEQ fields. It would be practical though to use them to get a
10th level if you were really desperate.

They do have other uses however, being the basis of the captions for tables,
figures, equations, etc.

Bruce Brown has come up with a way to get 18 levels of numbering
instead of the usual 9 levels. (Of course, nobody will be able to
understand the structure of the resulting document, but that is
another question…)

For the upper nine levels, use the built-in heading styles. Set them
up to use legal number format (e.g. 2.3.6.8). For the lower nine
levels, use a pair of fields. The first is a STYLEREF field to capture
the value of the preceding level-nine number; the second is a LISTNUM
field to create nine levels. The pair of fields for level ten will
look like this:

{ STYLEREF 9 \S }.{ LISTNUM LegalDefault \L 1 }

Each lower level will look the same except the LISTNUM level number
will be greater. You will want to make a set of AutoText entries, one
for each level.

One thing that you must remember to do manually is to use a restart
switch in the first level-ten number after any level-nine number.

{ STYLEREF 9 \S }.{ LISTNUM LegalDefault \L 1 \S 1 }

By using this trick you can get heading numbers like this:
1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9.

Notice that there is a period at the end of the number. This is part
of the Legal Default numbering scheme and cannot be removed.

Bob S
