How does the "auto" setting work in Paragraph Spacing?

How does the value "auto" work in Paragraph Spacing's "Before" and "After"
fields? I've searched Word's Help files but there's nothing about how this
value works.

This is one of the features introduced in Word to emulate HTML. I believe it
suppresses the smaller of the Space After of one paragraph and the Space
Before of the following paragraph to result in uniform spacing. For more,

No, I find that I'm more confused after reading the article than before. The
article focuses on how you can effectively set Space Before/After for a
group of paragraphs of the same style. The spacing can be suppressed between
paragraphs in the same style (but only by checking a box that is unavailable
if auto spacing is disabled). If I could get my head around this, I think it
would be a vast improvement and make it unnecessary to use so many different
styles, but I've never taken the time to play with it and figure out how it
works, so I'm still stumbling along with Block Text Begin, Block Text, and
Block Text End, for example.

And combining the Space Before/After where different styles meet would also
be a big help; I've just been working on a document where Heading 2 normally
follows Body Text. Since Body Text has 6 pts Space After, Heading 2 needs
only 12 or 18 pts Space Before, but if it follows a table (where the Table
Text style has only 3 pts Space After, then the spacing is different. I
really need to work with this feature!

Hmmm...I quickly scanned the article earlier but now after I read it
closer I think the KB article is wrong. I think it's referring to the
option you've described, "Don't add space between paragraphs of the
same style" which will only add space before the first paragraph in
the group and after the last paragraph in the group.(btw, the only
time I see it disabled is when 0 pts Before and After is used)

I think an option is still missing, though. A lot of users want is the
ability to define space before a group of paragraphs, space between
the group, and space after. The "Don't add..." option will suppress
all space. It's still a handy option to have but it could stand to be
expanded.

Anyway, I just don't see how HTML spacing option has anything to with
space before or after a group of paragraphs. If it is turned on and
"Auto" space is used it will add 5 pts of space between paragraphs
that use "Auto" space or use both values of Before/After between
paragraphs instead of using the larger of the two.

As I understand it here is how it works:

For the example, let us posit three styles: Body Text, Heading 1, and Block
Text, formatted as follows:

1. Body Text: 6 pts Space After

2. Heading 1: 18 pts Space Before and 3 pts Space After

3. Block Text: (Left and Right Indents and) 3 pts Space Before and 3 pts
Space After

You have these paragraphs in the following order:

Body Text
HEADING 1
Body Text
Block Text

Body Text

1. If you have HTML auto spacing enabled:

a. You will have 18 pts Space Before Heading 1, but the 6 pts After the
Body Text style will be suppressed, for a total of 18 pts.

b. The 3 pts Before the first Block Text paragraph will be subsumed in
the 6 pts after Body Text, for a total of 6 pts.

c. Presumably the space between the Block Text paragraphs will be 3 pts
(one canceling the other).

d. The final Body Text paragraph will be unaffected (unless it is
followed by a heading style or some other with Space Before exceeding its
Space After).

2. If you check the box for "Don't add space between paragraphs of the same
style" for the Block Text style, everything above will be true except that
there will be *no* space between the Block Text paragraphs, just before and
after the group of three paragraphs.

I haven't tested any of this, but this is the behavior I would expect based
on the descriptions I've read (and the way it seems to work in Web pages).
The annoying thing is that the "Don't add space" option is available only if
you have the auto spacing enabled, but I could probably still manage to work
with that. I just need to practice!

That's how I understand it too. If HTML auto spacing compatibility
option is not enabled then the smaller space will be suppressed
between the paragraphs.

The KB article needs some clarity. Today, after reading very
carefully, I understand it. (MS REALLY needs to work on those negative
options such as "Don't use HTML paragraph auto spacing". When their
steps include turning "Off" an option that starts with "Don't" it's
just too many negatives. In my head it ends up getting turned "On".
lol)



The article does not emphasize utilizing the Auto space option will
suppress the space between paragraphs that use a List Style only.
Space is not suppressed for a "series of paragraphs" as indicated.
Plus the example does not depict how the result should appear:

2. Item two



Body text


Also, where are you finding the "Don't add space" option disabled? If
I use Format/Paragraph then it's always disabled. If I modify a style
and use the Format/Paragraph command then the only time it is disabled
is if I have 0 Before and 0 After.

You're right, of course. Okay, this is opening up new vistas. The next time
I have to create a template of this sort, I'm going to experiment with this.
What I haven't figured out, though, is how to use any combination of these
features to achieve this result.

Heading 1 [18 Before, 3 After]
Body Text [6 After]
Block Text [3 After]
Block Text [3 After]
Block Text [6 After]
Body Text, etc.

What I'd really like is to have just 3 pts between an introductory Body Text
paragraph and the block of Block Text, but I definitely want more space
after the last Block Text paragraph than between them (which is why I end up
with so many styles). I don't see any way of combining Space After/Before or
suppressing space between paragraphs that would help here.

c. Presumably the space between the Block Text paragraphs will be

(one canceling the other).

d. The final Body Text paragraph will be unaffected (unless it is
followed by a heading style or some other with Space Before
exceeding its
Space After).

2. If you check the box for "Don't add space between paragraphs of
the same
style" for the Block Text style, everything above will be true
except that
there will be *no* space between the Block Text paragraphs, just
before and
after the group of three paragraphs.

I haven't tested any of this, but this is the behavior I would
expect based
on the descriptions I've read (and the way it seems to work in Web
pages).
The annoying thing is that the "Don't add space" option is available
only if
you have the auto spacing enabled, but I could probably still manage
to work
with that. I just need to practice!

Exactly. That's the area I think they are still lacking.

They're almost there with the "Don't add space option" but they need
to incorporate the ability to define space before a group, space
between, and space after. Instead of a check box to suppress the space
they could modify it to "Space between paragraphs of the same style"
and allow for more flexibility.

You're right, of course. Okay, this is opening up new vistas. The
next time
I have to create a template of this sort, I'm going to experiment
with this.
What I haven't figured out, though, is how to use any combination of
these
features to achieve this result.

Body Text, etc.

What I'd really like is to have just 3 pts between an introductory
Body Text

carefully, I understand it. (MS REALLY needs to work on those
negative

just too many negatives. In my head it ends up getting turned "On".
