Default xp tables and inserting tabs

When trying to insert a tab in a cell (or a series), I
have to change views. Remaining in the changed view (e.g.
normal), I go to a different table and try to insert a
tab in a cell (or a series) and again, I have to change
views to be able to access the option.

Any suggestions?

Are you talking about setting tab stops or inserting tabs? I can do either
no matter what view I am in. For the latter, when in a table, you must use
Ctrl+Tab

I'm referring to tab settings; other options which aren't
available (as though the table weren't there) are 1)
column width and row height; cursor does not "see" the
limits of these but I can position the cursor anywhere in
the text.
Thanks for the input

Perhaps you do not have the ruler displayed in Normal view?
