space bar problem

My daughter is a new Word user. When she hits the space
bar a bullet appears instead of a space, where can I
change the setting back to get a space. Also how do you
hide the paragraph sign which appears on documents.

Tom,

It is a space but you have "display non-printing characters" toggled. Press
CTRL+SHIFT+* (the one over the 8 key).
