Default "n new messages received" What does it mean ?

I have OE 6 on clients which access our own IMAP mail server.
Very often it happens, that the number of new mails in "Inbox" does not
correspond to "n new messages received" in the low right corner of the OE 6
window. Often this number is twice the number of the new mails in Inbox.
Any explanation ?
Of course, users are worried, that mail might be lost.
I have an anti-virus program on the clients, but this should not check
incomimg mail.
