Default Word 2002 changing footer information different (not odd pages)

Hello, can anyone out there, help me?

I have inherited a much amended document, typed by several
different individuals over the years, which is the
procedures and policies document for a voluntary company.
I have been tasked with changing the footer at the bottom
of the page, to reflect the title of that relevant section
(which could be that page OR the page(s) previous. I put
in section breaks (which the help page advised) to ensure
that the footer for page 3 for example, did not change
what was on page 1. Unfortunately we were unsure of where
exactly to put the section break AND which option to
choose - Next Page or Continuous? We selected Next Page
but despite choosing this, it still changed the footer
information. So that Page 1's footer was the same as Page
3!! Could it be something to do with the document being
already formatted (how do I remove them?) or it this a bug
with this version of Word?

Our only option to date, is to now split the document into
individual documents to allow the footer information to
reflect the header for that appropriate section, however
as it is 105 pages long, this is not the most desired
route! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Sue

Sue,

A STYLEREF field in the footer referencing a Heading style is a handy way of
doing this. See STYLEREF field in Word's help.

For example, format your policy section title with Heading 1 style. In the
footer (you only need one section and one footer) put the field { SYTLEREF
"Heading 1" }. Use CTRL+F9 to insert the field brackets and press F9 to
display results.

As for the current dilema with footers, it sounds like you are set up to
display different odd and even footers and "same as previous" is set. If
you want to continue with the method you are currently using then toggle off
"same as previous" on your header/footer toolbar and reappy the correct page
3 footer text.

If the section titles are formatted with a Heading style (or another
style that is different from the text), you can use a STYLEREF field in
the footer to repeat the text from the nearest preceding section title.

Are you remembering, in the new section, to "break the
link" with the previous section - before changing the
footer?
