Default Cannot send. Says I must re-install

I hope you can help. I have an HP laptop (only two months old) and spent 3
hours with the HP tech support last night and got nowhere!

I am using Outlook Express 6.0.

All of a sudden, I cannot send/reply messages. Error message says my
address book is configured wrong and I need to reinstall. HP says I need to
do a complete formatting of the laptop. There MUST be a simpler solution.

Incoming emails can be read in the preview pane, but if I click on a message
to open it up, I get the error message that it can't be opened.

The contacts in my contact pane have disappeared as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks all.

Please post the complete error message.

Windows version? Is the machine fully patched at Windows Update?

Windows XP Media with all current updates/patches etc.

"Address book is not configured correctly and cannot open. Please
re-install"
(or something very similar)

OK...and here's where if I had hair, I'd pull it out.

I found this bulletin on Microsoft's web page:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917288

Perfect...I thought. I deleted the update as specified in this bulletin.
But - when I try to copy the files it says, I cannot locate those files. I
cannot find any "application data" folder under any of the three users we
have on this laptop.
Grrrrrr. Is it me?

How did you "delete the update"?

Is "Security Update for Windows XP (KB923694)" found in Add/Remove Programs?

Is MS Office or Outlook also installed?

...I cannot locate those files

In WindowsXP, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as
hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden
Files and Folders under Start Control Panel Folder Options View.

I deleted the update by following instructions given. Went to Add/Delete
programs. Found update and deleted it.

Not sure about update KP923694 as I'm at work right now and don't have
problem computer with me.

Yes...MS Office is installed. Please don't tell me MS Office will now have
a problem.

Check back with us when you get home and have enabled Show Hidden Files and
Folders before trying to find the Address Book [which you should have been
able to find searching in Windows Explorer (WinKey+F) for " *.wab " (without
the quotes)].

If 923694 isn't installed, it should be (assuming the machine's running
WinXP SP2, Win@K SP4 or the various incarnations of Win2K03) and its absence
suggests that you either don't have Automatic Updates enabled or it's not
working properly.

Yes...MS Office is installed. Please don't tell me MS Office will now
have
a problem.

If Address Book is configured to share contacts with Outlook (can happen
when installing Office or Office updates), yes, it may be the cause of the
problem.
