Default my links do not update

I have a word document which has contents from 5 other word documents. I have
linked the 5 documents to my word document as copy special, paste as link as
Formatted Text (RTF).
I have the following problems:

1) I selected the automatically update icon in the Links option of the Edits
menu, but the links do not automatic update and it prompts me every time I
open my document.

2) I also get this error message every time I try to update the master
document “objects in this document contain links to files that cannot be
found. The linked information will not be updated”.
Help!

Thanks

Default my links do not update

Hi Caty,

I suspect the two problems are related - if Word can't find the source files, it can't update the information contained in the
links.

Have you moved any of the source files? This is important because, even if you move all the files together toa new location, Word
still look for the source documents in their original location. If you need to be able to move the files around, see how to
implement relative paths in the solution I've posted at:

Hi Caty,

Having source files in different locations shouldn't matter.

It seems, though, there's probably a problem with at least one of the links. You could toggle the field codes via Alt-F9 to display
the linkage field codes - they'll look something like {INCLUDETEXT "C:\\My Documents\\My File.doc}. Make sure the file paths and
names are all correct - including the double backslashes for the path separators. You could also try running my Field Link updater
(http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/show...?Number=261488) to confirm that the link details are correct. One important point to
note is that, if you've got images in the document linked to files on disk, and those images are formatted as anything other than
'in-line with text', you'll need to make them 'in-line with text' before you can check or update their paths.

One other possibility, though I doubt it applies for the error message you're getting, is that a source file is either a document
protected for forms or is password protected.

Thanks Macropod,

I actually think you nail it! And it had to do that all my source file are
password protected and read only recommended!

I will ensure will not protect my files with passwords.
Cheers and thanks again
