IE software causing hardware failures ?
I have a Dell 4500 that is now four years old. In the past ninety days I
have experienced failures of both my hard drive and now CD burner. I was running IE 7. Have any software problems associated with IE 7 been reported that maybe causing these failures? I had to replace my hard drive and now buy another CD burner. -- Tom |

Legitimate software cannot cause hardware to fail. Malware can probably
find a way. The hard drive in my 4500 didn't make it past the second year. Your's lasted 4 years? Some people have all the luck! This is not to disparage Dell, of course. Was your original drive by Western Digital? At the time 4500's were being built Western Digital was having a problem with some of their drive assemblies (a problem long since fixed.) --- Ted Zieglar "Backup is a computer user's best friend." Just curious if there was a link between IE7 and the hardware failures. I was
switching back and forth between IE7 and 6 right before the failures. Yes, it was a Western Digital hard drive that failed. Any recommendations on a replacement CDRW drive . Thanks to all that answered the post. -- Tom "Ted Zieglar" wrote: Legitimate software cannot cause hardware to fail. Malware can probably find a way. I wouldn't buy a replacement CD-R. DVD burners are now ubiquitous.
You'll be hard pressed to find a bad brand. They're all about the same price, roughly $40. --- Ted Zieglar "Backup is a computer user's best friend." Perhaps I will try my hand at the DVD burner. Aren't there two competing
systems for DVD burner? Which one is better ? -- Tom "Ted Zieglar" wrote: I wouldn't buy a replacement CD-R. DVD burners are now ubiquitous. You'll be hard pressed to find a bad brand. You may be thinking about Blu Ray and HD DVD. You won't find those on
DVD burners - at least, not yet. Very new technology. Or perhaps you're thinking of DVD-R and DVD+R. Most DVD burners have both. The difference between the two depends on whose marketing department you believe. Practically speaking, they're just as good. If you have a set top DVD player, make sure your DVD burner burns disks in the same format. Most DVD burners can burn double layer DVDs. Which is real handy if you have 4 hours of home movies to burn, in high definition. --- Ted Zieglar "Backup is a computer user's best friend." Tom wrote: Perhaps I will try my hand at the DVD burner.
