Default OE6 error message

When using OE6 to check my mail, upon completion of same I am getting this
message warning that " program has performed an illegal operation and will be
shut down. If problem persists contact vendor ". Nothing ever shuts down, I
have just closed the message and moved on. The mesage has a tag showing
Msimn. Can I do something to prevent this message from appearing or just
forget about it?

1. General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update,
installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss
in the futu
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3

This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook
Express/WinXP SP2.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

2. Checking for/Help with Hijackware

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Default OE6 error message

It's important to know the Details. When you get an "Illegal Operation"
or "encountered a problem" message, there is usually a Details button
(In WinME press Alt/D), or a "click here" link to see the error report.
When you click on the button/link, it will give a message like: XXXX
caused an error in YYYY and a bunch of register nonsense or it will list
the Appname XXXX and Modname YYYY. The XXXX and YYYY are important to
identify the cause and solution. You can ignore the rest of the
message.

Apparently, the XXXX is MSIMN, but it would help to know the YYYY part.

Also include operating system that you are using.

The message indicates that the error occurred in module unknown (YYYY).
The operating system is W98SE. And this minor glitch may be just the way the
system is supposed to respond given the input it receives. In any event, I
appreciate the time of all respondents. Thank you.

No, it is not the way Win98 or OE is supposed to behave. Follow Robear's
advice about checking for malware.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
