Default Retaining source formatting from Excel with a mail merge in Word

Recently at my work we changed from Office 2000 to 2003 and now when I do a
mail merge with a source document from Excel it doesn't keep the Excel
formatting in the Word document. The main problem is with Currency
formatting. I change the currency format in Excel, but when I complete the
mail merge in Word I lose it. I know there must be an easy fix, but I
haven't been able to find it.

There are two ways to deal with this problem:

1. You can change the way Word links to Excel (revert to DDE instead of the
new default OLEDB).

2. You can add a numeric picture switch to the mergefield.

Word 2003 (annoyingly) changed the way that Word connects to its data files
for mail merge. Word now receives only the raw data and is now expected to
provide the formatting - see
