Default Shared sub folders

One of my co-workers is sharing a subfolder with his manager, but when he
opens an unread e-mail or tries to delete it, it still shows as unread in the
manager's subfolder.

He wants to be able to work on the task requested in the e-mail, and then
have it automatically update as read, or have it deleted simultaneously in
both his, and his manager's folder. How do we get it to work?
