Default Cannot Update Compatibility from 97 to 2003

I have a Word doc that has footer issues, in order to resolve them I updated
the Tools Options Compatibility from 97 to 2003. However when I closed
and saved the document, then reopen the compatability reverts back to 97.

I found a bunch of custom codes under file properties and deleted them.
Sorry didn't make note of what they were. Those stay gone but it still
reverts back to 97.

Any idea?

What version of Word?

There is a single format, "97-2003."

We're using Word 2003. The document reverts back Word '97 when it's saved.
We've tried a Save As, but it still goes back to '97.

There is a single 97-2003 format, but there are separate Compatibility
settings for each version, with different items checked. The options are
designed so that the current version never has any boxes checked; they are
checked only for compatibility with previous versions, which is why some of
them are oddly worded.

If all you're doing is changing that setting and then saving, it may be that
Word isn't actually saving the document. Despite the fact that Compatibility
Options are document-specific (saved with the document), Word doesn't
reflect any Options changes in the Undo list. Try this: Make the
Compatibility Options change and then, in the document, press Spacebar, then
Backspace (making sure that the Undo button is enabled); now save the
document. This should result in the document (and setting change) actually
being saved.

Suzanne~

Thanks. I figured it was like the print/page setup settings and have tried
editing the body of the document when doing the saves. Still, the
compatibility reverses back to 97 and the footer go all wonky when it's
reopened.

Suzanne~

It's got to be something in the underlying code. My co-tech was working on
it while I was at lunch and pasted the text (text only) into a brand-spankin'
new document and verified compatibility was set to 2003. Saved it and then
checked the Compatibility - it was '97!

So I suggested copying to Notepad first, then copy it from there into a new
Word doc, verified compatibility was set to 2003. Welcome to the Halloween
Solstice. It was '97!

Go figure this one.....
I'm going to have to get out my exorcism kit.
