Default Security Update for Outlook Express released 11 May 2010

As it happens, I did see the very great Mott many times;
No doubt while you guys were spending all your time arguing the finer points
of stereo systems and not actually listening to anything.

Enjoy your pointless pop ups, and roll on Oct first, whatever you're
planning to bore each other with then.

That hooplehead is very well known in OE & IE newsgroups. Unfortunately,
(s)he's also one which I've continue to indulge for some reason or other.
I must be entering my dotage.

PS: In some cases, 01 October can't come soon enough! cf.

You are dealing with another hooplehead.

Windows Update always /assumes/ you'll be ready, willing & able to
reboot
after installing an update, if a reboot is in fact required.

If you've Approved the install (or download & install) of an update,
you've
implicitly told Windows Update that you'll be ready, willing & able to
reboot after installing the update.

This is all missing the point that Windows tells you that you can go on
working while the update is being performed: it does not say 'oh but
you
mustn't use x y or z.'

For the future, I will make sure that OE6 and WLMail are closed,
before I allow Windows Update to install updates.

You might add IE to that list.

NB: If it's a Security Update for Windows, chances are a reboot will
be
required.

Were OE or Windows Live Mail open, when I installed KB978542 on

I am pretty sure that OE and WLMail were not open on the desktop,
so you have probably identified a likely cause.

For the future, I will make sure that OE6 and WLMail are closed,
before I allow Windows Update to install updates. I will also
close IE8, if it doesn't prevent the Windows Update from
installing.

Was OE or Wal-Mail open when you installed KB978542 on the
laptop?

There is a very easy way to prevent it from asking repeatedly
for
a re-start. Restart your computer !!

However, this month's Critical Updates has raised an
interesting
issue. The package included the Windows Malicious Software
Removal Tool - May 2010 (KB890830) and the Security Update for
Windows XP (KB978542). There were no other items.

I have two Win XP (SP3) computers (a desktop and a laptop). I
allowed Windows Update to download and install both items.
The
laptop prompted for a restart. The desktop computer did not.
I
wonder why.

Cheers:

Now all I need is a way to stop it telling me I need to
restart
my computer every 5 minutes!

It was part of the last automatic windows update package

And is this in with our automatic updates or do we have to
get it ourselves?
