Were OE or Windows Live Mail open, when I installed KB978542 on
the laptop? - Not sure, so the answer is a definite Maybe.

I am pretty sure that OE and WLMail were not open on the desktop,
so you have probably identified a likely cause.

For the future, I will make sure that OE6 and WLMail are closed,
before I allow Windows Update to install updates. I will also
close IE8, if it doesn't prevent the Windows Update from
installing.
