Default Say "NO" to Windows Office - Try OpenOffice

Apparently someone from Microsoft if forcing you to use=20
their Office products. They don't force us to. We tried=20
OO and Star Office for our small business and home use=20
and found them very lacking to say the least. OO and Star=20
Office are marketed against Office as an alternative, and=20
the average daily user power or not would have to totally=20
re-train themselves in usage. Cost ratio vs Office,=20
granted, it is more but, the range of products aptly=20
applied to each user more than makes up the difference.
I would use my old (oem)copy of Lotus Smart Suite 97=20
again before either OO or Star Office....

-----Original Message-----
Sorry, OO is not being "stooged" for power users but for=20

those who need
basic office tools at a price that is just plain okay. I=20

thoroughly support
helping someone who for whatever reason does not wish to=20

or can not obtain
and utilized the high powered and gawdy MS creations.

Making these priced right programs available to those=20

who would use them is
only common decency and will not cause lay offs at MS or=20

create any
financial havoc to their organization.

When I recently came on the scene this Milly person was=20

making an issue of a
person attempting to assist by offering the info and =20

then belittleing the
merits of OO.

Perhaps she needs another weekend that isn't quite=20

so "bad" precluding
propensity to mouth off at a person's attempt to help=20

someone else.

We realize this is an MS topic board and accord it all=20

the immense awe,
adoration and respectability it demands. However, I do=20

not believe a boundry
is drawn which precludes a simple statement offering an=20

alternative to
someone.

Thank you

It seems you are the one who is attempting to put=20

someone down, while you
are stooging for OpenOffice. It is really not very=20

good, and lacks most of
the features power users need and want.

It's just Milly in yet another attempt to put=20

someone or something down.
Her
postings are of most value when ignored. Blames it=20

on a bad week end.

She rather resents, in this instance, the=20

recommendation of OO for the
lesser demanding users yet extolls virtue of some=20

other non MS program
and
rambles on about some other somewhat obscure OS. It=20

appears she is even
hung
up on Office 97 too.

Why is this woman telling us about linux and her=20

smartsuite. I
couldn't
care
less and she should refrain from posting on this=20

newsgroup her
experiences
of
fringe packages. she knows it well (or ought to=20

know it) that this is
a
MS
hosted newsgroup dealing with Ms' products.

Um, this is a forum to get assistance with=20

Microsoft Office, not
OO.o
or
Star Office. If you want to extol their=20

virtues, then post in a
place
appropriate to the product being extolled.

This is not one of them.

I use OO.o on my Linux machine (Mandrake 9.x)=20

and find it severely
lacking
from my expectations of what an office suite=20

should be. Even my old
Lotus
SmartSuite (1999?) does things a LOT better than=20

that program. It
has
a
LONG way to go for anyone who does more than=20

prepare a simple
document
or
uses a simple list in a spreadsheet.

And, as I said, the lack of a PIM is a major=20

drawback. Put in a
hook
to
Evolution (probably not possible now that Novell=20

owns it) and you
might
approach 25% of the functionality already=20

existing in Microsoft
Office
97.

| While the Microsoft public boards may not be=20

the most apropos area
to
| put in a plug for OpenOffice it certainly is=20

no troll. I
continually
| recommend and make it available to many=20

occasional, home and light
| office users.
|
| The MS renditions remain quite clutzy and over=20

loaded with junk
even
| after years of work. Using financial leverage=20

to replace
innovation
| and serving customer needs is the accepted=20

norm.
|
| Over pricing and scant regard for program=20

integrity and security
is
| to be expected and the reasons are quite clear=20

when dealing with
MS.
| After a few conversations with their=20

professional support people
one
| wonders what went wrong.
|
| So while I am forced to use many MS products I=20

am also quite aware
of
| the laggardly incorporation of the quality=20

design we should be
able
| to expect from the worlds software leader but=20

probably will never
get.
|
| OpenOffice is indeed a very legitament=20

alternative to those who
wish
| not to buy the MS monsters when a much simpler=20

program will serve
| their needs. So in showing consideration for=20

these users it is
| totally in line to indicate there are other=20

options available to
them.
|
| Free is a good price for a great compromise=20

program.

||| Hi,
|||
||| I know I am off the subject but Windows=20

Office is just soo
expensive
