I am trying to help a neighbor with an email problem.
She cannot open any email links that are presented in either an email or a web page.
She can open any web links, just not links to an email address.
She has Windows XP SP2 with full updates.

Anyone have any more suggestions or ideas?

Try some diagnosis?

E.g. in a cmd window enter:

ftype | find /i "mail"

FWIW here is what I get when I do that:

example
F:\ftype | find /i "mail"
mailto="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1
Microsoft Internet Mail Message="%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1
/example

Note that from there you could simulate what a mailto: URL causes,
e.g., in your Run... dialog and thus possibly get more clues about what
is wrong with yours. Hint: the %1 parameter includes the mailto: prefix.

If that's not relevant for your symptom it may if you were more explicit
about what you mean by "email links".

Thank you Robert.
I will try that on my next visit.
What I mean by "email links" is: If there is an email address in the body of a message, or a link
to an email address in a web page, when she clicks on that address, or that link, she gets the error
message
"Could not perform that operations because the default email client is not properly installed."
She can click on any web site (http://) link an it works fine. But any email address
) in an email message or any link to an email address (mailto on a web page,
brings up the error message.
Otherwise, here Outlook Express is working just great. She can mail from her address book, reply to
messages or send to any typed-in email address.

She has a two year old Dell that came with XP SP2 installed, but she does not remember when the
problem began, but wanted help after she could not send a complaint to an address in a product
support message she received. I have confirmed the problem, but all of the fixes that I found by
searching the news groups have not fixed it.
