From this description, your line is clearly a paragraph border. The article
to which Doug referred you
(http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Format...tRidOfLine.htm) does explain
how to remove such borders. I discovered last night, upon further
investigation, that there is in fact a yellow (not gray) border above the
footer, and it can be removed, as Doug instructed, by turning off the Top
Border or selecting No Border. I posted to this effect last night, but
several of my posts last night and this morning have been eaten by the
server because I evidently used a word the filters don't like.
