Default Disappearing images on Outlook Express 6

There is a setting in OE at Tools, Options, Read, Read All messages in
Plain Text that would prevent the images from showing. But if you had
that setting, you would see an HTML attachment to the message.

You also mentioned that in some cases the images show up after a minute
or two. That wouldn't happen if you had the read in plain text setting.

All the images in that message (that you sent me) are links to a web
server. So the images don't arrive with the message. Instead they get
downloaded when the message is opened. Do you see a box with a Red X in
it where the images are supposed to be?

If could be a problem with the web server. If it is overloaded, and OE
doesn't get prompt response from the server, it will give up on
downloading the images.

You might also check if you have recently installed or updated some
security software, it could be blocking images.

Other potential problem causes include:

- Image preview stops working
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/bugs.htm#nopreview
- Hotbar can cause image problems
http://www.thundercloud.net/help/hotbar-is-spyware.htm
- Another possible cause of problems is a corrupted cache. Try clearing
it.
IE5+: Tools, Internet Options, General, Temporary Internet Files, Delete
Files

As for the Word doc that you sent, it would have been easier to read is
you had pasted into a Notepad text file. Or even better would have been
a simple Message, Forward as ATTACHMENT.

Thanks for your suggestion Mike.
I have broadband and have been using it successfully and virtually
trouble
free for some years now.
Now I have now lost all images altogether on my emails and just get
text. So
the problem appears to be increasing.
I have reinstalled my MS browser with no effect.
Could this be down to NTL who have got their server in a twist?
Or is their suddenly some problem with using Firefox and Outlook
Express 6
together? I don't know because I don't know how the mechanism of
getting
images into emails works. So I'm groping in the dark.
I am going to take the liberty of sending you direct a typical source
message copied into MS Word. In this I can spot jpg and gif images but
they
are not getting onto the page. Cannot tell why. This is very good of
you to
help in this way, I much appreciate it, the NTL Help Desk is of no use
whatsoever.

What kind of Internet connection do you have?

Often commercial e-mails do not include the images with the message.
Instead, in the HTML code is a link to the image on a web server.
When
you open the message, OE will then start downloading the images. If
you
have a dial-up connection that could take a minute or two or longer
if
the images are large. Sometimes the server is busy and the image
download may fail.

If you look at the Message Source (Ctrl-F3) you can see if the images
are encoded at the end of the message (will look like lines and lines
of
random letters and numbers).

This is my first message to this group so I hope I have the right
one
for
this sort of question.

I have an unfamiliar problem with Outlook Express 6 that I cannot
solve.

Nearly all my emails from commercial sources to which I subscribe
have
suddenly stopped showing any images - but I can see the text. But,
very
occasionally after a minute or so the images will appear. Yet the
images are
there all right because I can frequently copy and paste them into
another
programme where they do show themselves - but not always. In
addition,
if
these images are hyperlinks then they work even though I cannot see
the
image but just the curser turning into a hand when it hovers over
the
invisible image.

So I have
1.. Sent images, JPG and GIF to myself and they work.
2.. Got friends to send me images and they work.
3.. I have checked TOOLS/OPTIONS/SECURITY to make sure that the
BOX
"Do
not allow attachments to be opened that could potentially be a
virus"
is
unchecked.
4.. I have turned off my Norton email protection.
Then I ran out of ideas. So can anyone suggest what the problem is
please?

I use Win 2000. Yes I know it's out of date, but just haven't got
round to
changing it.

Many thanks

Baz
