Angry Dividing lines that won't go away

Many moons ago, I created a set of dividing lines in a long, very important Word document. Now, I cannot get rid of them, which is a problem, because I am trying to publish the contents of this document. The dividing lines were created by simply holding down the shift key and the dash\underscore key (top row of qwerty keyboard) in order to paint a continuous line across the page.

To my mind, I have tried everything. The delete key. Painting and deleting the lines. Even painting and deleting sections that include the line. Nothing I've tried gets rid of them. Word treats these lines as if they were intended to become permanent boundaries in the document.

Please help.
