After you click the option to display the folder list (if it's not already
there) and click Apply, exit that screen. Now click on the Folder List and
navigate to the topmost folder which will be above the Local Folders called
Outlook Express. It's not imperative to do this but it does help ensure
that the compact will run without errors. The main things are to make sure
you are working offline, so that the compacting will not be interrupted by a
polling for incoming messages. Good luck.

I think maybe I have not correctly compacted my folders. Because OE
opens fine, switches identities fine, sends/receives mail fine but
Freezes when I click on a button in any specific identity like "create
mail" or "reply ".

Let me tell you what I did:

1. I created folders in OE6 under local folders .(These new folders
are NOT sub folders under Inbox. They are separate standalone folders
) I transferred all inbox and sent mails to these new folders.

2 Then per
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files...in.htm#compact

I tried compacting ALL the folders in ALL the identities.

As I said in my earlier email I am stuck on Step 1 which is:

1. In the OE Folder list (View| Layout| Folder List), click Outlook
Express so that no mail or news folder is open.

In reply to your message for compacting folders, on the OE horizontal
menu, I clicked on View, then Layout, (upto this point, fine), I get
to Window Layout Properties. At this point I am stuck because I see
"Basic" and "Preview pane". Am I in the correct area ?
I do not see how I can check Outlook Express.

I feel I am very close to solving this.

Can anyone PLEASE help me one more time.

Thanks
Tina

'Outlook Express' is the topmost entry in your Folder tree.

Did you import your old identity's folders into the new Named Identity?
Did
you clean out Inbox and Sent Items and then compact all folders before
doing
so?

Hi
I tried doing a manual compact.
per
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files...in.htm#compact

Here are the 3 steps:

1. In the OE Folder list (View| Layout| Folder List), click Outlook
Express so that no mail or news folder is open.

2. Now click File| Work Offline so that no new messages will be
arriving.

3. Finally, click File| Folder| Compact All Folders.

I could do steps 2 and 3. But in step 1, I do not see Outlook Express.

In addition, I created a new identity per your suggestion. It is still
freezing when I click on a mail to view it.

I never new of compacting, I am doing it now. Still it is freezing and
"not responding"

What else can I do to get my OE6 working again ?

Kind regards
tina

Try a manual compact of your folders as outlined at this website:
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files...in.htm#compact

If that doesn't fix it, try creating a new identity in Outlook
Express,
then
shut down Outlook Express using the menu, File/Exit and Log Off
Identity.
When you reopen Outlook Express, select the new identity you created
and
set
up your mail account in that identity and test it. If it works well,
then
import your messages from the problem identity, using
File/Import/Messages
selecting from an identity and point to the previously named identity.

Let us know if that fixes the problem. You also should not store
messages
in the default folders (Inbox, Sent Items, etc.) but rather create new
folders to contain them for archival purposes. The default folders
are
frequently written to, accessed and deleted from, providing
opportunities
for a byte to go astray. If a single byte in a DBX file becomes
corrupted,
the entire folder becomes unreadable. Failing to compact manually and
frequently (at least weekly) can also lead to a similar corruption.

I did what you suggested ie found the location of the store folder
for
each identity and deleted Inbox.dbx for each identity.

And tried OE. It is still Freezing or not responding when I click on
a
mail to view it.

Is it because I have about 7,000 emails ? ( Incoming and sent mail).

Most of my emails have only a few lines. Probably about 15% have 1 or
2 page Word doc attachments.

I have had a slighly smaller number for quite a while and I never had
a problem. This freezing just happened all of a sudden.

I have cleared the background compactation in OE for all the
identities. Also created new folders in OE6 and compacted them. So my
Inbox and Sent mail folders are lean and I have emptied all the
delete
mail folders.
I checked my RAM with OE open ..it said 81% free. When I start my PC
the RAM is 98% free.

I have one identity (email address) in OE with only 10 emails in it.
When I access a mail in that identity too the emails are frozen.

Any other ideas ?

Thanks for all your help in advance!
Tina

Find the location of your message store folder (OE menu,
Tools/Options/Maintenance and Store Folder button). Close Outlook
Express
and use Windows Explorer to navigate to that folder and find
Inbox.dbx
and
delete it (after you've transferred all messages from it you wish to
save).
Then reopen Outlook Express and the problem should be fixed.

OE 6 Freezes when opening mail and creating mail.

My OE freezes when:
1. when opening mail
2. When I click on a particular mail to read it
2. When I click on the create mail button

It seems to do everthing else normally.
I can switch identities quickly etc. It sends mail quickly. I
receive
mail quickly etc.

I do not see an hourglass. Sometimes it says OE not responding.

I made separate folders under OE local folders, transferred the
Inbox
and Sent mail to these folders, deleted all the delete mails. I
also
went offline and
compacted all the folders.

I have run Scandisk, Defrag, Virus scan etc.

But it still Freezes.

BTW I have switched to Netscape Browser as IE won't allow me to
download Word Docs( that's another problem I have).
Do you think using Netscape ( the latest version) and OE at the
same
time is a problem ?

Pls. let me know how to solve this FREEZING problem I have with
OE6.

I probably have about 1,000 emails in 5 or 6 diifferent email
identities on my OE.

Win ME, 192RAM, 750MHZ CPU, cable connection.

Thanks
Tina
