Default More alternatives to text boxes.

I have just tried to post this in reply to an earlier post
but there was a transport error.

I need to put text into boxes but:
The text box function requires manually placing what will
end up being hundreds of boxes all with the same
properties, with no option to change them en masse if I
change my mind later about borders, background pictures
etc.

Auto text does not seem to be able to offer any more than
just creating a template which I can use later on but
which still involves manual placing.

Tables do not result in individual boxes separated by
white space (where I need to cut the paper to create
individual boxes). Also, tables automatically resize when
too much text is put in them. I need all my boxes to be
of uniform size.

Is there a way to do this so that, after I have typed all
the contents of the boxes, I could get MS Word 2000 to
change all the properties automatically if I were not
happy with the result?
