Default Error 10061, 0x800ccc0e, bug?

It's definitely the April Windows update!!!! Those patch numbers are
KB930178, 931261, 931784, 932168. I installed them on 4/14. I tried
unistalling them, and like I thought, not that simple! I did a system
restore for 4/13 (day before install) and it totally fixed the problem.
Checked program files after restore and the updates are gone and OE is
working just dandy!

The people at MS who are advising people on this blog that it's just a
"coincidence" that the problems with OE start appearing after the April
updates are full of doo doo!!

Now, just to make sure, I need to run Live Update with NIS to make sure that
wasn't the culprit.

Will check back.

Below is a fix I found in another post. It answers my question about saving
the old identity's files. I may try this to see if it works. Also, the
article I read about SP2 causing problems with OE was with archiving files.
Evidently the work around is not as simple as uninstalling SP2. I would
think this would be the same for uninstalling any updates.

This is a reply from the other thread:

"Don't give up yet: Your current Identity may be damaged by NIS, especially
if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new
Named Identity (File Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is
well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from
the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File
Identities Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store."

I have NIS 2005 and disabling it did not solve the problem. I really do
think this is a Windows Update problem. I read an article some time back
that there were problems with SP2 and Outlook Express. The problem was a
different one, but maybe some of the new updates have caused more problems.

My XP support license may still be good and I might give that a try, but I'm
always hesitant because you always get a level one support person on your
first try and it always seems like you have to go through several replies
before they actually are able to identify the problem. I know they will
first try to rule out if it is our ISP's.

On another post, it was mentioned that NIS might have corrupted User
Identity files and suggest creating a new identity. But, what a pain! I'm
sure tht means you can't save anything from Outlook. Right?

Carole, which software are you using for virus and firewall?
Only asking to rule out that possibility.

This exact same thing happened to me about 2 weeks ago. There is absolutely
nothing wrong with my ISP connection or email settings. You need to pay
attention that this in only happening when a new user is logging on. This
does not happen if you reboot/restart the computer. This only happens when
one user logs off and another user logons. After reboot, everything works
fine! Like Mike said, having to reboot is not a solution.

It is nothing wrong with my ISP. Everything was working fine for a month ago.
Still works fine, but only for the first user. Next user who logs in gets
the error 10061. Port 110 and 25 are blocked.
And I have edit the error message, because I was not at home.

Spam blockers and mail scan did not change anything. Still can't send or
receive mail after changing account in windows.

Mike, the error indicates that you are failing to connect to the server,
most common reason for this is that you have the wrong POP and or SMTP
server in your account setup, or you are trying to connect to a server that
you are not connected to?

Check at your ISP for the correct settings.

Who is your ISP because the error does not appear to return a valid server
name?

Most errors appear like this for example:

The connection to the server has failed.
Account: 'timber2498', Server: 'pop.mail.yahoo.com',
Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:
10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Your error is:
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'your_account',
Server:'your_POP3_server', Protocol:POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): NO,
Socket error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800ccc0e

Did you edit the error?

What is the connection setting in the account toolsaccountsdouble click
the accountconnection tab?

Try removing the always connect using check mark?
