Default automating footer?

It would be good if I could set all users to
use the modified normal.dot from a central location . But I also have to set
excel files the same way so this may be more complicated than I thought...
like educating the users... geez, who am I kidding!?

Most Word people would advise strongly against forcing users to share a central
Normal.dot. This is where many of the users' personal customizations (such as
AutoText and formatted AutoCorrect) are stored. They won't be pleased if you
take this ability away from them. That why, for Word, it makes sense to set up
templates for each document type and get users to use those (instead of the
blank document from Normal).

You could, perhaps, remove or replace the "blank document" toolbar button with
one that creates a new document from a company template. Store this in a
network location, assigned as the users' Workgroup Template folder. Change the
Word shortcuts on the machines to use the /n switch (I think that's the one
that starts Word up without a blank document) or the /tTemplateFullName switch
to create a new document from a company template.
