Default Headers & Footers not visible in Word 2002

If you have certain types of text in your headers/footers (e.g. drawing
objects, text boxes, hidden text, etc), there are settings to show and print
(or not) all these under Tools | Options, check the View and Print tab.
Check there, these settings may be set differently on different computers or
in different programs.

When opening an existing Word document in Word 2002 the
headers/footers are not visible & don't even print with
the document. If the same document is opened in Word
2000 or 2003, then it's fine. A new document can be
created & the header/footer will be visible, just not
when opening a previously created document. I haven't
been able to find anything about this searching the
knowledgebase and google. Had an Office expert review
the problem & he saw that the document settings were also
being changed, but couldn't make any sense of it. Anyone
else seen this and have a solution? Thanks!
