Default lost PST files

Vanishing pst-files are often caused by virus scanners placing them in
quarantine when a virus signature has been found in it. Since the virus
scanner cannot clean the file directly, it is placed in quarantine. As the
virus cannot do anything when it is stored in the pst-file, pst-files should
be excluded from being scanned by the virus scanner.

If that is what happened, then look at the quarantine folder of your virus
scanner and restore the file from there.
Depending on your version of Windows and whether you've had it enabled, you
could also use the Previous Versions option.
Otherwise, restore from backup.

I did not delete anything..something did. I then tried to use a file
recovery program, but it does not find the actual PST files...only
outlook.pst.tmp whihc is notjhing useful.

where did they go? what happened? They just vanished and cannot be
retrieved...any advice how I can get these back?
