Default I know the basic "rules" but is there a workaround?

I know in Outlook 2003 that I had to open each response to a meeting request,
while the "sent" copy was still in my system-level folders, in order for the
reponses to be tracked.

In 2007, I believe the change is I don't actually have to open them, but I'm
fairly certain the sent copy still has to be in my system folders (as opposed
to in a Personal or Archive Folder).

So...let's say that didn't happen. For instance, I let Auto-Archive run and
it moved the Sent copy into an Archive Folder, and I received another
response (which I opened).

I tried to move the Sent copy back to my System folder, mark the message as
Unread, and open it again...but nothing is tracking. I'm well aware that I
broke it on the initial step, but is there a way to "force" Outlook to track
the responses I've already received? I know it will track any additional
replies, as long as I leave the Sent copy where it is...I just want to fix
the ones that came while I wasn't properly set up.

Thanks.
