However, note that multilevel (outline) numbering isn't that different in
Word 2007, although the user interface (obviously) has changed a lot.

To create an outline of headings you can choose one of the predefined
heading formats listed under Home tab | Multilevel List (corresponds to
choosing a predefined heading format in Format | Bullets and Numbering of
previous versions).

To modify an existing multilevel list, first place the insertion point in
the first level 1 item (which means the first Heading 1 paragraph of the
document if you are dealing with heading numbering). Then click Home tab |
Multilevel List | Define New Multilevel List; you are presented with a
dialog box where you can define all aspects of numbering for all numbering
levels.

Thanks much for the additional instructions. However, I remember how easy
it was to construct an outline in an earlier version of Windows Word,
most likely
the 2003 version. Is it possible to down load the 2003 version, in which
case I will have both versions on my HP Pavilion desk top ( 64 bit )

I went to viewoutline and constructed an outline of five level 1 entries.
Each of these entries had a number of subordinate entries. I then went to
the multi-level list on the home tab. There I was able to assign letters A to
E for the level ones. But I had to do it one at a time. I was unable to
assign a numerical designations for my level two's as I had intended.
