Default Table spacing

I'm tryin to find a way to set up spacing before and after tables in a
long document written with Word 2007 (or XP).

I was expecting that a table would be regarded as a paragraph, and
would therefore have "space before" and "space after" attributes. No
such luck.

The best solution I have found is to nest my table inside another
outer table, where the outer table has only a single cell. Then I can
use the cell margins of the outer cell to create the space I need.

And then, if I could figure out how Table Styles work, then I'd have
global control over my spacing, as desired.

But this seems convoluted, and formatting of tables seems to be
restricted when they are nested.

Anybody have any better ideas ??

thanks
