When you execute the merge, in the Format drop down, select Attachment so
that your Word document is sent as an attachment.
If format is really important, use the Add-in that is on the following page
of fellow MVP Graham Mayor's website to create a .pdf file for each
recipient

and then use the method in the article "Mail Merge to E-mail with
Attachments" at

to send the email message with the individual .pdf documents attached
