Default column headings not displaying for all columns

I discovered that the column layout has to be down, then across for the
headings to display above each column. That solves this problem, but another
developed.

I would like to have the detail display as a smaller size than the subreport
to add alternating back color for the rows of data. I created a single
column which displays the data correctly, but the report header/footer are
cut off. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks.

I read in other posts how to create a group header so that labels will
display on multiple pages of subreports. This worked great until the
subreport with columns. I was able to get the labels to display above each
column by repeating them across the report header section. But when I moved
them to the new group header, the labels only display above the first column.
I have the same settings on the columns tab of the page setup. What am I
missing?
