I have created a document in Word 2002 with 18 sections in it (each on a separate page). This is a daily document which is accessed by around 20 users (who edit a page each) and edited throughout the day before being sent to third parties.

Recently however, the document seems to encounter problems and freezes for users who are trying to save their updates. Following the freeze it is necessary to force-close Word and subsequently the document is inaccesible for all. When an attempt is made to open it, it freezes almost immediately and once again Word must be forced to close.

Has anyone encountered similar problems with documents being shared over a network with multiple users? I am at a loss as this happens to the documents being used on some days but not on others. Essentially, at the start of the day the document is simply a template which people add information to and as such the template has been copied many times, once for each day.
