IN OFFICE 2000, MS WORD SWITCHES TO DISPLAY LARGE FONT SIZE AND DESKTOP
ICONS. EXCEL DOES NOT DO THIS WHEN OPENED. I AM UNABLE TO FIGURE OUT WHY
THIS HAPPENS AND HOW TO FIX IT.

Your CapsLock key is broken too. Either that, or you are
deliberately SHOUTING at the people from whom you ask help, which
is probably not the best approach.

Once you get that caps lock problem under control, in Word, try
Tools/Customize, select the Options tab, uncheck Large Icons.
